Fun with Vellum and Alcohol!

This card is for everyone who loves the Expressions in Ink Designer Series Paper. This paper is simply beautiful.  Vibrant colors and designs.  It is hard to describe, so let me just show you:

Did you know that you can make that same ink splotched design and it’s as simple as having a few supplies:  a piece of Vellum, a few Stamping Blends, 91% Alcohol and a Water Painter.

Before I start showing you with as many pictures as I could, let me show you the finished card

For this card I used a variety of shades of pink Stampin’ Blends Markers: Polished Pink, Magenta Madness, Flirty Flamingo and Melon Mambo.  The first step is to randomly color splotches on the piece of vellum.  You will want to scatter the colors around in a random pattern.  Cover the entire piece.

Next you will need a Water Painter that you have filled with 91% alcohol. (And yes it does need to be 91%, not 70%.)  You can find this at your local drug store – Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc.  Please label your Water Painter as the alcohol and water look exactly the same and you might want to use this to make more cards once you see how easy it is!  Just gently squeeze a few drops and let it spread the colors.  I found that it worked best when I actually gently “dotted” the paper.

As you’ll see in the video (link is below)….I put too much alcohol on the first time and the colors were spreading too much.  Not to fear….just blot with a paper towel and re-color and try again.  The beauty of this card is that the alcohol dries super fast, so there is not much time waiting for the “ink” to dry.  This is my finished piece:

Once you have finished and like the look, now it’s time to decide what color you would like as a background.  I used Basic White, but you will get a whole different look if you change the color of the cardstock behind the vellum.  Here are a few examples of the different looks: (Basic White, Daffodil Delight, Flirty Flamingo and Polished Pink)

The next step is to glue the vellum to the piece of Cardstock and then emboss.  I actually forgot this step in the video.  I embossed and then glued.  It was easy to fix as when I glued if after, I could feel where the embossed pieces fit together.  But it is easier if you glue first, then emboss.  When adhering vellum I’ve found that using a small sponge to lightly spread the Multipurpose Liguid Glue around into a very think layer avoids having any of the glue “show through”.  You can choose any embossing folder…for your card.  .I chose to use the Pretty Flowers Embossing Folder.

After your piece is embossed, then you will need to trim it to 3 1/2″ x 4 3/4″ and you will be ready to put the rest of the card together.

I also embossed the front of my card base with the Tasteful Textiles Embossing folder.  I like the extra detail it gives to the front of the card.  This is actually easy to do when your card folds at the top.  Just place the front flap in the embossing folder so that the fold of the card is lined up with the edge of the embossing folder and then run it through the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss machine.

 Vellum Embossing

If you would like to make this card, these are the supplies that you will need:

  • Tasteful Textiles Embossing Folder (optional)
  • Pretty Flowers Embossing Folder
  • Peaceful Moments Stamp Set (or sentiment of your choice)
  • Basic White Thick Cardstock – Cut 4 1/4” x 11”; Score and fold at 5 1/2”
  • Polished Pink Cardstock – Cut 3 5/8″ x 4 7/8″
  • Basic White Cardstock – Cut two pieces 4″ x 5 1/4″ (inside & for behind vellum)
  • Vellum – Cut 4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Water Painter (or small paintbrush and small cup for 91% Alcohol)
  • Pierced Bloom Dies (sentiment tag, optional) or use any shape that fits your sentiment)
  • Ink: Polished Pink
  • 3/8″ Polished Pink Open Weave Ribbon (about 12″)
  • Adhesives: Multipurpose Liquid Glue, Glue Dots, Dimensionals, Stampin’ Seal
  • Tools: Paper Trimmer, Paper Snips, Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine

This card is much easier than it looks and you get a very similar design.  And every time you make this card your design will look a little bit different and you can’t copy exactly how the inks will spread.  You can also use entirely different colors too.  This is the card that I made in the video that is linked below:

This card was made with Stampin’ Blends that were…you guessed it…in the purple family – Highland Heather, Fresh Freesia and Blackberry Bliss,

A few weeks ago,  I helped a husband make this card for his wife used Stampin’ Blends that were “blue”, her favorite color.  He used Night of Navy, Balmy Blue, Bermuda Bay and Pool Party.  He used the now retired Seabed Embossing Folder to emboss the vellum.  It made a great underwater scene.  I should have taken a picture of it as he did an awesome job and the card was just beautiful.

If you would like extra help making this card, you can check out my video on how to do this technique here: Vellum & Alcohol Technique for Cardmaking

Have fun experimenting!

Happy Stamping!

COMING SOON! – JULY-DEC MINI CATALOG

July-Dec Mini Banner

Are you wondering why the new July-December Mini Catalog isn’t out yet?…..after all it is already July.  The answer is that due to shipping, some of the products in the new Mini catalog were not going to be available by the time the catalog was supposed to launch in July.  In an effort to not disappoint customers, Stampin’ Up! changed the launch date to August 3rd. The catalogs had already been printed, hence the name on the cover.  Catalogs have been shipped to my house and I’m trying to figure out a way to get them out to my customers as the catalogs are in Virginia and I am currently in Arizona.  I might have to enlist the help of my husband….hmmmm we will see how that goes!  If you are interested in receiving the new Mini Catalog and do not already receive one from another demonstrator, please go to my catalog tab (at the top of my blog) and request a copy!
