Patchwork Hand-Penned Cards

Today I have something a little different to share with you. It’s a fun way to make a set of four cards using a patchwork of Designer Series Papers.

It’s actually a very simple technique.  You will need four pieces of Designer Series Paper, each a different pattern, and each cut 4” x 5 1/4”.  I used the Hand Penned Designer Series Papers.  I love the soft colors and simple patterns.  Plus it has a good blend of patterns that are perfect for “quilting”.

If you’ll notice on these two cards, for example, that the four pieces that make up the “patchwork” are exactly alike…same size shapes on each card.

The reason they are the same size and shape is because all four pieces of the 4” x 5 1/4” Designer Series Paper is cut at the same time.  I clipped the four pieces together with a binder clip so that they wouldn’t slide or get slightly off kilter when they were being cut with the Paper Trimmer.  The placement of the cutting lines is pretty random, I just picked a few angles that I thought would work.  If you watch the video below, I do give a few placement measurements on the cutter if you want to follow more exact what I did, but it really is random.

After the pieces were cut, and divided up….four pieces for each card, the pieces were adhered to a 4” x 5 1/4” piece of Basic White Cardstock.   I then die cut them using several different dies from the Scalloped Countours Dies and Rectangle Stitched Dies to show a variety, but you can cut them all the same for more unity if you would like.  I also used the Stitched so Sweetly Dies for several of the sentiment tags.  The stitching on the outside seemed to make it look more “quilted” to me

If you would like to try this technique,  you will need the following supplies:

  • Hand Penned Designer Series Papers – Cut 4 pieces (each one a different design/pattern) 4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Hand Penned Petals Stamp Set (sentiment)
  • Special Moments Stamp Set (Sentiment)
  • Tasteful Textiles 3D Embossing Folder
  • Dies: Stitched So Sweetly, Scalloped Contours and Stitched Rectangle
  • Basic White Thick Cardstock & Highland Heather Cardstock (Card Bases) – Cut four card bases either 4 1/4” x 11”, Score and fold at 5 1/2” or 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, Score and fold at 4 1/4”
  • Blushing Bride Cardstock – Cut 4″ x 5 1/4″ (emboss)
  • Highland Heather Cardstock – Cut 4″ x 5 1/4″ (emboss)
  • Basic White Cardstock – Cut 8 pieces 4” x 5 1/4”, (4 for patchwork, plus 4 for inside) plus scraps for sentiment tags, plus one piece 4″ x 5 1/4″ for mat (emboss)
  • Ink: Highland Heather and Blushing Bride
  • 1/4″ Whisper White Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon
  • Adhesive: Multipurpose Liquid Glue and Dimensionals
  • Tools: Paper Trimmer, Paper Snips, Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine

If you need help making these cards, please check out the video below.  Have trouble viewing the video?  You can watch it on my YouTube Channel HERE.

Hope you will give this a try.

And just a note:  If you watch the video you will see that one of the cards I made where I stamped an image and colored it is NOT pictured.  That is because after I finished the Facebook Live, I decided that I did not like it.  It was one of those “One of These Things Doesn’t Look Like the Others” moments, so I took carefully removed the stamped image piece and just added a sentiment instead.  And that is the beauty of making cards.  We can change what we do not like.  and for reference, this is the original card plus the card after I changed it.  Which do you like better?

Happy Stamping!
