Tombstone Treat Boxes….and a fun idea!

If you were looking for a cute Halloween treat box and didn’t look closely at Page 51 in the July-Dec Mini Catalog, you might have missed these hidden gems. What I am talking about are these Tombstone Treat Boxes.

And if you purchased these and was wondering how to use them, or decorate them, you only have to look at the catalog for a few ideas.  One of those ideas is to cut a “window” in the top piece so you can see the goodies inside like this box:

There are two pieces to the boxes – the top and the bottom.  The top piece is slightly larger and that is the one to sue when cutting the window using the Seasonal Labels Dies.  I  centered it on the top of the “flat” box (before you put it together!) and ran it through the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine.  To make the window, I cut a piece of clear Window Sheet 3 1/2” x 2 1/2” and placed a glue dot in each corner and then inserted it into the top of the box.  The glue dots will keep the window in place so you can see all the pretty treats inside!

I used the Cute Halloween Bundle to stamp and die cut several images.  Once you have decorated your box, the only thing left is to add candy!  You can fit two small snack size candy bars, but I chose to add 5 little Hershey Nuggets that I covered with strips of the Cute Halloween Designer Series Paper.  And….I have a little hint for you that will make this task easier!  To cover a Hershey Nugget, you will need a 1” x 3” strip of Designer Series Paper.  You can get 12 strips from one piece of 6” x 6” paper.  And because Stampin’ Up’s paper is double sided, that means 6 strips of each design.  I like to use Tear & Tape to adhere it, and to make it easy (and fast), I first cut my paper into two 6” x 3” pieces.  I flip one piece over and then place a piece of Tear & Tape across the top (6” side) of each piece, then cut it into 1” strips.  So much easier than the tedious job of putting Tear & Tape on each individual piece.  Now you are ready to wrap your candy!

What do you do with the pieces that were cut out for the window??  I am not one to throw away things that can be used, so I did a little brainstorming and decided that they would make excellent “tombstones” to put on another box!  I just cut a small piece off the bottom.

For this box, I used the Frightfully Cute Stamp Set and the Frightful Tags Dies.  I did use a sentiment from a retired set  (Ghoulish Goodies) for my tombstone because I liked what it said and it was the perfect size).

I die cut two trees, stamp a witch and then fussy cut and stamped a moon.  I wanted a little bit bigger moon, so I punched a 2 inch circle and then used the moon stamp several times to cover the entire circle.  I adhered the tombstone, moon and witch with dimensionals and simply tucked the two trees behind.  I added a few stamped bats for a spookier look.

If you’d like to make these boxes you will need the following:

  • Cutest Halloween Stamp Set and Halloween Punch
