General Cards, Sailing Home

Sailing Home Birthday

Today is my husband’s birthday.  And it’s a big one too!  I wanted to have a party for him (COVID-19 kind of ruined that).  Not so much to celebrate but to just kind of remind him how old he is….65!  Medicare age!  Almost retirement age.  But he doesn’t look it.  He’s just as handsome now as he was when I met him when he was a senior in college.  He’ll read this (because he’s a good husband).  So hopefully I will have given him the card I’m going to show you before he reads get around to checking his mail.  I’m trying to keep a little element of surprise in here.

He likes lighthouses.  If we travel to a city or town that has a lighthouse, we will be going to visit and take a tour.  And all the better if he is still allowed to climb it.

This lighthouse is from the Sailing Home Stamp Set.  I haven’t used this stamp set since last summer when it first came out in the 2019-20 Annual Catalog.  It was a favorite and I made lots cards with this set.  You can see one of those cards in this post:  Patriotic Lighthouse.

For this card I stamped the lighthouse in Basic Gray and then I did something I don’t ever do on purpose…..I tore the edge of the paper!  And once I started, I didn’t stop until I had gotten all the way around.  I thought the card was a little too stark with the Whisper White Cardstock background, so I took a sponge dauber, put a little ink on it and carefully went around the torn edges of the outside.  It look a little fog-like so I decided to do the entire front, so it would look like light a foggy sea morning.

I added one of the Sail Away Trinkets to a piece of Night of Navy/Sahara Sand Twine that I wrapped twice around a striped piece of the coordinating Come Sail Away Designer Series Paper.   I sponged a little Basic Gray ink on the Designer Series Paper too to make the stripes look more gray and less white.  The stamp set will be carrying over to the new catalog, but those three items will be retiring on June 2nd.  So if you want any of the paper or embellishments, order it now so you don’t miss out!

If you would like to make this card, this is what you will need:

  • Sailing Home Stamp Set
  • Picture Perfect Party (Retired- Inside Sentiment)
  • Come Sail Away Designer Series Paper – Cut 4” x 1 3/4”
  • Gray Granite Cardstock – Cut 4 1/4” x 11”; Score and fold at 5 1/2”
  • Basic Gray Cardstock – Cut 5 1/4” x 4” (tear along the right side)
  • Whisper White Cardstock – Cut 3” x 4” (finished size after tearing is approximately  3 3/4” x 2 5/8”, plus a scrap for the anchor.
  • Basic Gray Ink
  • Sponge Dauber
  • Night of Navy/Sahara Sand Twine
  • Sail Away Trinkets
  • Adhesive: Snail or Multipurpose Liquid Glue

Since the Sail Away Stamp set does not have a birthday sentiment, I pulled out one of my favorite retired stamp sets – Picture Perfect Birthday and stamped the inside of my card and then added an anchor die cut with the matching Smooth Sailing Dies.

And don’t forget to decorate the envelope!  I like to put matching Designer Series Paper on the envelope flap, but you can stamp right on the outside of your envelope too! I usually put a piece of scrap paper inside the envelope before I stamp just to make sure it doesn’t bleed through, although I haven’t had that problem yet….Stampin’ Up!’s envelopes are some of the best and are not “see-through” like a lot of others.

Now I need to go make a cake!

Happy Stamping!
